Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle: When the Largest US Ship Lost Without a Trace
How can the largest ship in the US navy disappear without a trace? This is a question that was on the minds of many people in March 1918, when a coal transport ship, the USS Cyclops, was lost on a voyage between the West Indies to Baltimore.
A century has passed, the question is still not answered.
The Cyclops is nearly 550 feet long, with a crew of 306 people and 11 thousand tons of manganese in it. He has sailed since 1910, traveled the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean and Mexico, sending coal to the world and helping refugees.
However, in 1917, when America was involved in World War I, the Cyclops became a valuable asset for the navy - tasked with transporting troops and coal to fuel other ships.

In March 1918, the ship was given a new cargo: tons of solid manganese used in steel making. Cyclops left Brazil with the fragile metals, then sailed to Barbados to supply supplies before making a long trip to Baltimore.
The last message from this ship is quite simple: "The weather is good, everything is going smoothly". However, his journey on the ninth day, was very strange. Since that time, no one in the Cyclops has ever been seen or heard from - vanished without an emergency warning.
In an article published several years after the disappearance of the ship, Santa Fe magazine described the strangeness of the incident. "Normally, wood scraps or buoys from lost ships can be found after an accident, but that isn't the case with Cyclops," they wrote.
"He disappeared as if there were sea monsters or giants that immediately took him to the depths of the sea. This theory is reinforced by the absence of an emergency call to ask for help as happens if the ship will sink, "he added.
Over the decades, there have been a number of sensational theories regarding the disappearance of the Cyclops. Including those who say that he was one of 100 ships and aircraft that mysteriously disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.

All of that, he said, was related to the Cyclops which might pass over the Puerto Rico trench - the deepest part of the Atlantic that is adjacent to the Bermuda Triangle.
Although the opportunity is small, Barrash hopes that the ship can be found, considering that underwater exploration technology is now getting better. In recent years, shipwrecks have been found thanks to this technology. Maybe, Cyclops could be the next one.

The 1911 Deadly Heat Wave and Made Many People Mad
In July 1911, along the east coast of the United States, temperatures rose to exceed 40 degrees celsius and lasted for 11 days. In addition to killing residents, the incident made many people almost crazy.

The kingdom of Gowa was established in 1300, since the beginning the kingdom expanded its influence by using naval fleets. Gowa Kingdom relations include Sulawesi, eastern Kalimantan, Sumbawa, Flores, Timor, Maluku, Papua and northern Australia.
The relationship was intensified when King Tunibatta (Gowa) sent envoys to establish relations with Sumbawa, Sumba, Timor, Flores, Maluku in 1565. In 1626, the Kingdom of Gowa controlled the island of Flores, specifically West Flores, Solor, and Alor. This happened in conjunction with the Portuguese and VOC's efforts to expand the territory in the archipelago.
Since then, the influence of culture and human movement from Sulawesi to Flores, especially West Flores, has intensified. In addition to Gowa Tallo, the Makassar Kingdom under the leadership of Sultan Hasanuddin, Makassar succeeded in controlling almost the entire territory of South Sulawesi and expanding its territory to Nusa Tenggara (Sumbawa and parts of Flores).
In 1661, Manggarai surrendered to the Kingdom of Bima. After six years, Gowa's rule in Mangagrai ended because Gowa lost the war against the Dutch (VOC) and had to sign a Bongaya agreement and the Makassar people were prohibited from sending boats to Bima, Solor, and Timor. Nearly a century ago, in 1795 the famous Bajo pirates from Halmahera operated around the Flores Sea to the West Manggarai region - Flores.
